Best Broadcast Microphones for podcasting

small crews and solo creators, untreated rooms, self-operated

The broadcast-style dynamic on a boom arm exists because radio studios solved this problem decades ago. A tight cardioid dynamic worked close hears the voice and very little else, which is exactly what an untreated room needs, and the internal shock mount deals with the desk bumps that ruin an otherwise good take.

The trade against a USB microphone is a preamp: these are quiet, and a thin interface preamp will leave you reaching for gain that brings the hiss up with the voice. Budget for the interface in the same breath as the microphone, or buy a model with the gain stage built in.

What matters for podcasting

  • Dynamic and tightly cardioid - the room is untreated
  • Internal shock mounting, because it lives on a desk arm
  • Preamp gain available to drive it without audible hiss
  • Arm thread and weight matched to the boom on the desk
