Best Audio & Field Recorders for field production
shooters working out of a bag, mains power not assumed
The change worth paying for is 32-bit float, because it removes the one irreversible mistake in location sound. A level set too hot used to end the take; captured this way the loud moment is still there to be pulled back afterwards, which matters most on the interviews nobody can stage again.
Sync is the other half. A recorder carrying timecode drops into the edit against the picture without anybody clapping or lining up waveforms, and over a multi-day shoot that saves more hours than any feature on the front panel. Power it from the same batteries as the rest of the bag if you possibly can.
What matters for field production
- A recording format that survives a level set wrong
- Timecode, if the edit has to line up against picture
- Powered from the batteries already in the bag
- Inputs for the microphones you own, phantom included
