Best Subwoofers for auditoriums

houses of worship, theatres and halls, fixed install, volunteer operators

A subwoofer in a fixed install is not there for effect, it is there so the main speakers can stop trying. Hand the bottom two octaves to a box designed for them and the mains run cleaner and louder in the range where speech actually lives, which is usually the complaint that started the conversation.

Placement decides the result more than the model does. A corner adds level and a great deal of unevenness, and two subs in the wrong places cancel each other somewhere in the seating. Get the crossover point and the polarity right before assuming the box is too small - most disappointing bass in a hall is a phase problem wearing a shopping list.

What matters for auditoriums

  • Crossover point that unloads the mains where they struggle
  • Placement planned against room modes, not left to the last day
  • Polarity and delay settable, because you will need them
  • Install-grade mounting and a finish the room can live with
