Sennheiser e901 Boundary Kick Drum Microphone
The Sennheiser e901 is a half-cardioid boundary layer condenser microphone made for kick drums. Rather than mounting on a stand, it lays on a pad or blanket inside the bass drum and uses the boundary surface itself to capture a full, defined low end with a natural, realistic tone. The half-cardioid pattern and optimized low-frequency response deliver fast transient handling and a tight, articulate kick sound that sits cleanly in a mix. Its wide 20 Hz to 20 kHz range reproduces both the deep sub-thump and the sharp beater attack.
The pre-polarized condenser element runs on 48 V phantom power and connects through a gold-plated 3-pin XLR for a clean, reliable signal. Its low-profile 515-gram housing sits securely inside the drum with no hardware to set up or knock over during a fast changeover. Because it captures the drum from within, many engineers pair the e901 with a dynamic mic such as the e902 to blend the inside weight of the boundary mic with the outside punch and click of a front-head mic. For live and studio kick capture, the e901 is a dependable, low-maintenance solution.
