Countryman E6 Protective Cap
On the E6 the cap is the tuning control. The omnidirectional caps come in three high frequency characteristics, flat, +4 dB and +8 dB, which is how one earset is made to sit right on a soft speaker in a dry room and on a loud one in a live house without changing microphones.
The directional E6 gets its pattern from the cap as well: fit the cardioid cap for a wide front angle, the hypercardioid cap for the tightest rejection of monitors behind the performer. Both directional caps are the same part in four finishes matched to the boom colours, which is why a directional E6 ships with two caps in the box and why spares are worth carrying.
