Best Tripod Systems for live production

crews cutting a show as it happens, no second take

A camera position on a live show mostly stands still for two hours, so the qualities that matter are the unglamorous ones: it holds height without settling, it does not wander when somebody walks past it, and it can be levelled quickly on a floor that turns out not to be flat.

A ground-level spreader gives the most stability and the biggest trip hazard, which is why a mid-level spreader is usual anywhere a crew moves in the dark. Set eye line for the seated subject rather than the standing operator, and keep the quick-release plates consistent across positions so a camera can be moved between them without hunting for the right adapter.

What matters for live production

  • Holds its height for hours without settling under load
  • Spreader choice that suits a floor people walk across in the dark
  • Levels quickly, because the floor will not be flat
  • Quick-release plates matching every other position on the show
