A black mist filter takes the edge off digital sharpness, blooming highlights slightly and lowering overall contrast for a softer, more filmic image, while the black tint keeps shadows from lifting the way some diffusion filters do.

This one drops into a standard 4x5.65 inch matte box tray and comes in four strengths, from a light 1/16 touch up to a heavier 1/2, so a DP can dial in exactly how soft the image reads.
