A diopter is a magnifying element that shortens a lens's minimum focus distance, so a standard cinema lens can rack into a macro close-up, a hand detail, a product shot, a texture insert, without swapping to a dedicated macro lens.

This one mounts in a 114mm matte box filter stage rather than being handheld, and it comes in four strengths, +0.5, +1, +2, and +3, so a focus puller can pick the closest working distance the shot needs.
