Sennheiser MKH 8018 Stereo Shotgun Condenser Microphone

The MKH 8018 packs a true stereo shotgun into a single rugged tube, purpose-built for the kind of broadcast where the ambience of the room or stadium is as important as the commentary - live sports, arena events, and large-venue coverage where an engineer needs a wide, immersive stereo image without rigging a pair of separate mics. Two matched true-condenser capsules sit inside one housing, switchable between MS, XY-narrow, and XY-wide modes so the stereo width can be dialed in for the shot without swapping hardware.

Sennheiser designed the 8018 to survive the demands of stadium broadcast: a Nextel-coated body for a durable, low-glare finish, a 5-pin XLR output carrying both stereo channels over a single rugged cable, and a 40 Hz to 20,000 Hz frequency response tuned for crowd ambience and commentary clarity. It has picked up industry recognition including a NAB Best of Show award and a TVB Europe award for its stereo imaging performance. Because the stereo decoding happens after the capsule, engineers get full control over the M-S balance in the truck or in post, making the 8018 a one-mic solution for capturing a genuinely immersive broadcast soundscape.
