A black mist filter lifts the shadows very slightly and lets highlights bleed into the frame, which takes the clinical edge off a modern digital sensor without softening detail the way a diffusion filter does. Irix offers three strengths: 1/2 is the most pronounced, 1/4 is the usual choice for faces, and 1/8 is a light touch that mainly affects specular highlights.
