The LSR38 fixes the stand that is about to fall over. A boom extended sideways, a heavy wireless head, or an uneven floor all move the centre of gravity outside the tripod, and adding weight low down is the only real answer.

It is a ring, 16 inches outside diameter with a 6 inch hole, so it drops over the column and sits on the legs. Filled with sand it weighs 38 lb; filled with water, 22 lb. Empty it is 0.8 lb and packs flat, which is why it travels.
